for National Security Leadership, Character and Ethics

NDUF is making an impact. Read on to find out how you can too...

The Chair is Established: On March 15, 2006 NDUF announced the establishment of the Colin L. Powell Chair for National Security Leadership, Character and Ethics at the National Defense University. The Chair is named for Colin L. Powell, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State.  General Powell's extraordinary life of military, government, and private service to his nation exemplifies the ideals the Chair is established to uphold.  General Powell is a graduate of NDU's National War College and is also a recipient of the NDUF's American Patriot Award.

General Richard B. Myers Comes to NDU: Since it's inception, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Richard B. Myer, USAF (Ret.),has held the chair. General Powell, for whom the Chair is named, conveyed his approval, “General Myers is a distinguished leader and patriot.  I am very pleased that he will be bringing his talents and experience to inaugurate this new chair.  I also express my appreciation to Mr. Nash Broaddus for his generosity in creating this new opportunity for learning at the National Defense University .”

"Many times there are no good answers, just best answers for a circumstance. This course is giving me the foundation I need to evaluate choices that will be presented and, hopefully, give me a few tools in which to use in making future choices.
~Rosemarie DiGeronimo, NDU “Ethics in Organizations” Student"

Impact on the Students of NDU: The Powell Chair is now in its fourth NDU-wide ethics elective classes, which have been offered as the university’s commitment to ethics and leadership development increases. Using case studies and student presentations, these seminars have examined the role of the leader in large government organizations and their ethical responsibilities to subordinates, peers, superiors and the American public. By intense study and discussion, the class aids the future leaders of the American military, intelligence and government agencies to deal with the complex moral and ethical problems they are sure to face.

In addition, the Colin Powell Chair has increased awareness of the importance of leadership and ethics through high-level lectures to NDU students from the US and abroad. In multiple lectures, Gen. Myers has spoken to hundreds of high-ranking military and civilian students. As a pinnacle to this achievement, the Colin Powell Chair hosted two JPME Ethics Conferences bringing together the ethics professors at the JPME level, and will ensure NDU's place as the tip of the spear in this vitally important field of study.

Recently, the success of this program has been part of the inspiration for the establishment of the NDU Institute for the Study of National Security Ethics and Leadership.

Help Us Endow this Vital Opportunity for NDU! The students interacting with General Myers and his NDU partner, Professor of Ethics, Dr. Albert Pierce, will leave NDU in the spring 2008 and go immediately back to National Security Leadership positions, including some who will go back into command positions on the front lines. Your support of this program is needed in today's national security environment more than ever before.
