President Bush Speaks to Students of NDU,
Announces Plans for Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan

| From the NDU Website: September 9, 2008 - President George W. Bush addressed the students of the National Defense University today as part of the university's Distinguished Lecture Program. The President set forth his plans for a troop reduction in Iraq and a troop augmentation in Afghanistan to an audience comprised of students from the military, civilian agencies, and several international countries. |

| Part of the NDU Foundation's mission is to promote excellence and innovation in education by nurturing high standards of scholarship, leadership, and professionalism. The NDUF is proud to have again supported the annual Secretary of Defense, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Joint Force Quarterly writing competitions. NDU Press hosted the final round of judging on May 20–21, 2008, during which 23 faculty judges from participating Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) institutions selected the best entries in each category.
NDUF would like to thank NDU Press for their exceptional success in coordinating these outstanding competitions. And of course congratulations to the winners! You are a shining example of excellence in National Security research and studies. Thank You! |

| Alumni Updates |
NDU's National War College Graduate, General Colin L. Powell, United States Army (Retired), former Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, addressed the students of the National Defense University as part of the university's Distinguished Lecture Program on September 15, 2008. General Powell gave reflections on his leadership and policies. After his speech, General Powell personally escorted a group of students from City College of New York through his collection of memorabilia which is maintained in NDU's "Special Collections".

Component Spotlight: The Center for Technology and National Security Policy (CTNSP) |
The Center for Technology and National Security Policy (CTNSP) examines the implications of technological innovation for U.S. national security policy and military planning. CTNSP combines scientific and technical assessments with analyses of current strategic and defense policy issues, taking on topics to bridge the gap. The Center has produced studies on proliferation and homeland security, military transformation, international science and technology, information technology, life sciences, and social science modeling. Recent successes include the development of the NATO Response Force, planning for Stabilization and Reconstruction, and a Citizen Preparedness Poster on WMD. The Center also provides technical and policy expertise to the faculty and students at the National Defense University. |

Professor Profile:
Michael J. Baranick, Ph.D, Senior Research Fellow with CTNSP - In 1999, after moving from the Gaming Center to CTNSP, Mike taught NDU's first course on Peacekeeping. Today, Dr. Baranick's time is spent not only teaching electives on nation building for both ICAF and NWC, but also providing research and policy support to various world regions dealing with rebuilding and managing conflict. Mike spends a considerable amount of time assisting in the mitigation of conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Frequently traveling to the region, he works with their governments on establishing national security plans and ultimately assisted in the writing of the current plans for both countries. Publishing regularly in the areas of stability and security, this coming week Dr. Baranick will present a paper on “Peace and Stability” at the UN Peace Festival in Geneva, which is celebrating Nelson Mandela's 90th Birthday – father of all modern peacekeepers. |
