Joint Force Quarterly  Conveys Chairman of the Joint Chief's Message of "An Apolitical Military"

NDU teaches far more than theory and practice to the next generation of civilian and military strategic leaders. As this issue of the newsletter demonstrates, it exposes them to the country's leading practitioners who discuss their own experience in carrying out and coping with policy. It is in this setting that a discussion of today's crises and challenges better prepare tomorrow's leaders for defending the security of our nation and our allies.

In a few days, 574 members will graduate from the National Defense University and assume increasingly demanding responsibilities. In 5 to 10 years, the names of some of these graduates will become as familiar to a national and possibly international audience as General Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker as they deal with a not yet known threat to our nation's well-being. To the NDU Class of 2008, we extend our best wishes and Godspeed.

In the upcoming edition of NDU Press' highly regarded security journal,  Joint Force Quarterly , Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, responds to several inquiries on his political opinions.

"What really moved me on this," the Chairman said in a recent interview, "is in a number of all-hands calls I've had around the world, I've had young Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines in public fora ask me who I was voting for, who I thought should win, [or] what would happen if this candidate or that candidate won." The resulting article, while not suggesting  Servicemembers remove themselves from the political process, encourages those in uniform to "put aside their partisan leanings." (MORE)

General Petraeus Visits NDU
Each year NDU conducts its exceptional Distinguished Lecture Program, which brings high level experts and practitioners to speak to NDU students and opens the floor to their questions. On May 27th, as part of this program, Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq who has been nominated to head American forces in the Middle East, visited NDU. All Distinguished Lecture Programs are fully non-attribution, allowing the speakers to respond candidly to questions posed by NDU students. On May 22, Gen.
